This is my friend Sheela's new track, remixed by no other then electro legend Legowelt. The track is set to one of my favorite movies too, Hausu, so it's double the trouble for me.

Last time I saw her, we were in the middle of a packed dance floor talking about the latest tracks she just finished up when a douche bag interrupted us by saying "so are you two gonna talk all night?" He continued to hit on the both of us. Even though his approach was ALL WRONG, I don't blame him. Sheela is brains, beauty (she looks like a model) and a walking power house of creativity.

I sorta put myself on a record buying lock down since my last trip down to LA left me with tons of expensive records and ZERO money. But, I'm heading down this weekend with a huge crew of DJing and musican friends to probably what will be the disco party of the year (last year was a roof top Tenderloin pool party. This time there will actually be a heated pool that doesn't need 6 guys to blow it up). We are all bringing vinyl.

It's like a record nerd spring break and it's going to be so good.

 In reality, I haven't actually DJ'ed a party in a long while. My last night doing it was Halloween and although that was really, really fun, it's incredibly exhausting doing it till 4am.

Also explains after a stint doing a regular night, I needed a much deserved break from listening to common frustrations that had nothing to do with the music that's actually playing and for how draining it is to promote a night on a regular basis. People don't realize it but DJing is hard work.

Right now, I'm into playing tracks early when there is no pressure to get people on the dance floor and you can play whatever you want. I'm more than positive each car full of DJ's can get the party dancing and skinny dipping by the end of the night.

Here's the line up: my favorite local band Jonas Reinhardt is playing some sick spaced out kraut, freestyle duo Corinne and Josh Azano are opening with some Miami flavor, two of my favorite San Francisco DJ's are tossing some jams in between and Lindstrom is closing the night in a cosmic haze. It's going to be pretty epic and should not be missed.

 No matter how much I complain about living here, the "scene" and the shear boredom, I'm always caught off guard when I'm reminded of how great it actually is to live in SF. There may not be as much going on here as there is in NYC or LA, but we've got something that they don't have and that's these two here.

Probably one of the sultriest, sexiest punk rock queens people have never heard of.

One of my favorite DJ's Tim Sweeney from BIS killed it last night at the Honey Sunset NYE Party. We danced on the balcony nonstop like the Peanuts Gang.

Most girls i know think a pretty face and a well paying job is sexy. I think a brainy music nerd with a huge record collection is hot. Maybe that's why all the guys I've dated have all been into DJing and record collecting. They usually have big guy crushes on guys like Tim too.

Do fashion people "get" these music references?

I often fantasize that someday, people who like fashion and people who like good music will merge. No more separation of fashion friends and music nerd friends. I know it is possible, but I can't talk about Pheobe Phillo or my love of cutie Kiko Mizuhara with my music buddies over the turntables. I can't listen to anymore Lady Gaga references when I'm hanging out with my best dressed gays. Its like I'm living secret lives.

The two places on earth where tons of regular people know their shit when it comes to music is a) Europe and b) Japan. I always think that Japanese designers and Dutch/English designers are ahead of the game, intellectually speaking. They aren't trying to sell us commercial trends like most brands, and sometimes I get the hint that their collections are like a huge middle finger to designers who are in it to sell pretty. I may or may not be on to something.

Whatever it is, Jun Takahashi listens to a lot of Krautrock and watches a lot of cheese sci-fi films and I like him for that. No, this isn't his best presentation, but it sure put a smile on my face.

The Lives of Angels

Puro Instinct is the new moniker for the band Pearl Harbor. People kept asking them why they changed their name. Who cares. They are the same band, just ever evolving.

Keep your ears open for their 15-year old guitarist Skylar Caplan too. She can play better than guys twice her age.

Because of these fine blondies, I got to go back stage at the Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti/Puro Instinct show at Bimbo's. People think hanging out with bands back stage is cool or something. For the only few times I've done it, it's actually kind of boring and frankly a bit awkward. It just looks like this and you are mostly watching friends' bands take advantage of all the free baggies of Doritos and Vitamin Water. You aren't really missing anything.

I think more interesting things happen on the floor with the audience. One of the DJs was playing this song before Ariel took the stage with one of the most entertaining sound checks I ever witnessed. I immediately went back downstairs to listen to this gorgeous song. It's perfect. Enjoy.

Watching Stars

I've been listening to a lot of Ernest Greene's music on repeat, probably because I'm really exited about the coming of spring in this season's coastal chill.

Under the moniker Washed Out, this is what I call the ultimate neu wave surf music that has Ariel Pink's lo-fi home recorded sound to a dizzying, 80's Miami synthpop (a la Sorcerer). Both his first release on cassette tape and his lastest EP, High Times, are stunningly beautiful recordings.

He also has a great blog full of candid pictures of people he loves very much.

Pearl Harb☮r

Pearl Harbor is a musical collaboration between two of my good friends, Piper and Cody, and Piper's teenage sister Sky. Their jam sessions and live shows birth sparkling, haunting and beautiful pop music.

There first record is in the works and coming out sometime this winter. I'll keep you posted.

If you are a dance music connoisseur, you know that house music and techno wasn't meant for teenage candy ravers and douche bags that work in Silicon Valley. It used to be good, like a marriage between the funky basslines of Funkadelic and Kraftwerk's computer glitch pop. Not to mention it paved the way for cyborg electro masters like Egyptian Lover and Mantronix.

One of it's earliest forms was found in the Detroit/Chicago scene when techno music was urban music premiered on amazing dance shows like The Scene television show.

The Miracles Club are a new duo from Portland that are channeling Detroit's greatest, like Juan Atkins and Adonis. Featuring Rafael Fauria and Honey Owens (formerly of bands like Valet, Jackie O Motherfucker, Tra La La and Nudge), the Miracles Club play shimmering analog synths sprinkled over the deep, dark, bouncing rhythms. Kid 606 is even a big fan, calling the duo "badass psychedelic afrotech jams."

If you are going to be in the Bay Area November 9th, you should check them out at Donuts' Three Year Anniversary party at the Knockout. All three are amazing performers.
