Do Animals Believe In God?

Photobucket

I've been listening to a lot of Pink Military lately. My friend Piper from SurfSide Slashers makes most of the awesome custom band tees I wear and I think our next collaboration will be on a Pink Military Do Animals Believe in God tee, though I'm not sure about the colors. We can do anything I want. What are your thoughts?

You can get a generous serving of their discography from their website, Mezzanine Floors. It includes the album as well as their John Peel Sessions ("Wild West," and "Degenerated Man" are my favorites). These are obviously from a vinyl rip from a really clean copy, so the sound quality is really rich.

White Chalk Lines

I'm now on the lookout for the ultimate white suit (though nothing seems to beat this long fringe number worn by Polly Jean back in 2001. It says "Vegas, baby! Vegas!").

Photobucket
I always thought of her as a "forward dresser." She never seems to pay any attention to what other people are doing. It is always fun to see how she reinvents herself with clothing, even if her "period" of music is no longer to my taste.

I think my favorite era of "PJ style" is this one (white dress with her own photos on it, royal blue pumps and an arm full of "CDs")

Photobucket

Check out this video for White Chalk at her home in Dorset. Her black dress is amazing!

Apparently Polly and John Parish decided to do a second album collaboration (though they have been working together on most projects for the past 15-16 years). Here is the new single.

EchoNOEcho

Was thinking about these boys the other day. They are not only talented, creative people, but genuine, kind and generous friends too. I am always thankful to have people like this around in my life. Damon is being the man of few words, but a brilliant man none the less. I enjoyed seeing Daniel talk about Suicide's influence on him and I love how he takes a big bite of a sesame ball at the end! Hope they are having fun on tour :)

I've always described their music to people as BODY music. It's something you feel instinctively by nature, like how the rhythms take you in as if it was the sound of your own heart beating. You can see it too in Daniel's seizure-like jerks and wiggles on stage. It takes you over, physically, like a possession that cleanses the body, cleanses the ears. Their sound is so rich, so powerful.

Here is the most recent video of them performing in Brooklyn

Style Iconoclasts: Wire

Photobucket

Clearly I'm a huge Wire fan (I christened this blog after one of their songs and make lots of references to their music). I grew up in the suburbs of Northern California and listened to lots of first/second wave punk and adored almost anything on the Dischord label. As an 11-year old, I somehow stumbled upon an obscure band with an amazing album titled Pink Flag. My life would never be the same.

Perhaps it is that they not only embody the punk rock thesis of minimalism and DIY, but they were art school proteges who captured the intellectualism, fashion and captured music's relationship to the art world (like sound matter that could be shaped, textured and manipulated).

Photobucket
As an art student in 1976, founding member Colin Newmen use to sit in the back seat while Brian Eno & Peter Schmidt (artist and lecturer at Newmen's Watford Art College) drove him around and discussed art and music. Colin tells Simon Reynolds in his book "Rip It Up and Start Again" that "As soon as I stepped in that car I was no longer just a rather poor student but a friend and an equal, an artist sitting in a car with other artists. I could babble on about my ideas."

Photobucket

With Newmen as lead, drummer Robert Gotobed, bassist Graham Lewis (a fashion student) and guitarist/painter Bruce Gilbert, Wire crafted punk music into something that was beyond its working class/three chord beginnings, sculpting rich songs and soundscapes with stunning visual imagery (like in Map Ref. 41° N 93° W) and lush honey-sweet harmonies (like in Outdoor Miner).

Photobucket

Like any founders of what would be called post-punk, the arty and scrawny boys of Wire were also well styled and kept their look polished, tailored and minimal (in juxtaposition to the chaotic looks of punk rockers before them). They preferred clothes in gray, black, and sleek white, keeping with softer shades that avoided the punk cliches (as art students, visual presentation on stage and on camera was just as important). I think boys (and girls) should take notes. All white is possible when done right!

Photobucket

One of the reasons why I fell hard for M was that he too had a love for Wire (this was long before they got back together and started touring again/re-releasing old albums). We didn't know anyone who loved Wire so much and I think it was a permanent link between us. We taught ourselves how to sing and play Outdoor Miner and play it out at the end of a set often. For us, djing it is like a statement of love and devotion, to each other, to the band we love, to the people listening and to every lyric that burns in our hearts.

Twinsies

If your are an avid fan of Dropsnap kids, then you may have seen this girl a while back:

Well, she's back

I wouldn't blame them because her hair is that amazing. In Japan, there are no rules, only expectations (boys wear long skirts, girls wear extravagant costumes, yet, everyone wears the latest in designer wear and are expected to out do each other). But with this girl, she doesn't even care about any of those expectations. This isn't a costume and it isn't over-the-top. It's clearly just punk rock.

I think this is the trillionth time I've watched this video. So awesome! This reminds me of:

I was a fan of bloodsuckers, Bubonic Plague, when she was the lead singer. I'm not sure they are still together, though. But, I have been out of the loop since Tiny Creatures closed.

“A Woman is Closest to Being Naked When She Is Well Dressed"

More postings later this week. I'm up to my neck in job searching so just listen to Soccio while you wait :)

Gino Soccio - Dance Exercise Music Volume One (this finding is a 13-minute mix Soccio made himself for people to workout to. It features "Dancer," "Try It Out" and "It's Alright," my favorite Soccio songs. Thanks Beat Electric!)

Plus, I had the most amazing Black China Bakery brownie when I made a trip to Rainbow Grocery yesterday. It was the best brownie I've ever had (and it's vegan!). Very moist with small chip chunks and walnuts.

Limi's still keeping signature Japanese design light and fresh, mixing traditional European waistcoats, sailor trousers, film noir drama/glamour, English tweeds with draped layers (something Papa Yamamoto is a master in). Besides Ann D, Rodarte, Papa Yamomoto himself and a handfull of other designers, I think Limi is definately a new favorite.

I'm really digging thigh-high socks and stockings a la Anastase though instead of knee highs, but I love the styling for this show very much.

For some reason, I listened to Death in June while clicking through this show. I normally don't listen to them, but I'm enjoying Douglas Pearce's English, dooming baratone. I guess it is a sign of the times (I'm out looking for jobs in this market and it's hell).

Down On the Street

Can't wait for Limi Yamamoto's (aka Limi Feu's) show today, I'll post favs later after this afternoon. Here is her spring collection I've been meaning to post for some time now. There is a real softness in the masculine-feminine interplay here. She is a female designer which makes her understand a women's body and needs. I especially love how she hates carrying a bag so she sews them into the clothing or crafts oversized pockets (a detail I'm smitten with in lots of clothing. It really makes a difference for me). Very clever and practical.

I'm going to be honest: I was not impressed by Marc Jacob's over-exagerated cliche of the 80s. I think Gabrielle Greiss, the new creative director for Sonia Rykiel, had a better vision of the new wave era. Sure there was Rykiel staples of glitter and girlish, French charm. But I also saw, in some looks like the second shown here, a homage to John Cryer's duckie (who wore bowlers, secondhand vests and trousers). Of course, the most memorable was those perfect gutter snow, pointed creepers he wore, something I will be donning myself soon once I find them.

I can't help but post this

One of the reasons he is a favorite designer is that he is a master sculptor/draper when it comes to construction. I also love how he takes ordinary articles of clothing, such as the overcoat here, and crafts something that is conceptual, yet completely wearable. The poppy red is so stunning too.

My all time favorite designer can do no wrong. She has been the queen of the "le garçonne" look since the 80s, merging masculine staples with feminine looks. I adore the waist cinchers with the equestrian inspiration. I will definately make some DIY feather headbands too.

p.s. Last fashion show postings for a while at the end of this week, I swear! I will be posting tons of music soon!
