Fall 2009

Love these possessed ghost bitches. These clothes will haunt me in my dreams (like my re-occurring David Bowie waiting at the DMV dream). It's like Ann-Sofie was inspired by shops like Paxon's Gate, one of my favorite stores in the city that features taxidermy, bell jars and birds nests. I love how the models walked to the Exocist theme and Ghostbusters.

Catastic!
I can't stop posting this everywhere! The music is so awesome!
Speaking of music, just saw The Pains of Being Pure At Heart last night and they were really fun. I think Daddy Slumberland might guest soon at Jammies too. Doubtful he will bring the new baby (just saw pictures, so cute!). He said he is really into "skinhead reggae" (does that mean ska?)
It's so weird to see kids into this stuff now when some of us were into it so long ago. Case n' point:
Brad Cox of Deerhunter:
"Hey I saw some guy wearing a MBV t-shirt. Yeah. that guy!"
(laughter)
"Hey it looks like a pretty old shirt. How old are you?"
: "21"
Brad: "You're 21? That shirt is older than you!"
(laughter continues)
That is exactly how I feel about it too.
A sadder note: Randy Bewley of Pylon died 5 o'clock that evening of a heart attack behind the wheel. He was only 53. It is just as depressing as when Lux Interior died earlier this month. The world looses a great guitarist but his radness lives on.

Spring Uniform
It's hard to give up that outfit that you've worn, day in, day out for the past 3 chilly months. That leather jacket, satin blazer, black peg-legs and white tee were so comfy together, so cute. So why not wear it in a Spring, bleached out version?

(my god, the shoes)
I would wear Ann-Sofie Back's Fall 2008 line for Spring in a heartbeat
Balmain (so perfect)

I hope M doesn't notice that I'm thefting his cropped denim jacket (he doesn't even wear it). I'm thinking about shoving major shoulder pads inside too.

Dude Watch
How amazing is this guy?

He's wearing these H&M women's mittens because he is so obviously cold. Probably doesn't even know how good this all looks together.
What is it about men's clothing that looks so effortless? He probably rolled out of bed like this, brushed his teeth, put on his skinnies, sensible walking shoes and bundled up by throwing on his girlfriend's mittens and scarf. Done!

This Love is Fucking Right

New indie darlings with the best name ever, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, perfectly capture the jangly pop of Black Tambourine, Aisler Set, and MBV's Ecstasy and Wine (my favorites of the 90's indie pop era. Of course they are on Slumberland!). I haven't been listening to cute, squishy stuff in a looooong time, but it's just so good.
Doesn't Peggy the keyboardist look like she could be my twin sizzta? We would definitely swap clothes.
Love the video and how she just wears what she slept in. Something I have mastered myself!
Just got the record and every song is a jem. Go get it for yourself!

Style Iconoclast: Ira Glass

It's weird to think that it took me 25 years to discover I have a "type" that I'm attracted to. My first crush was a teenage John Cusack who was too tall, too thin, too pale, too old for most 4 year old girls to be crushing on. But, for some reason, he had a quality I liked.
Men who are: thin, vegetarian, intellectual in an unpretencious way, have taste, dress well, eat well, have great record collections, enjoys a good book or two, hates "machismo-ness," looks good in suits and has white sprinkled into their dark hair, despite their youth.
These men have a spokesperson and his name is Ira Glass.
He has an ageless, nonchalant, smart voice. When he laughs into the mike, it was to the kinds of moments, the kinds of things you would find attractive for a guy to laugh at.

I don't know if he is a big record collector. He is related to Phillip Glass and that, my friends, is close enough for me.
And their are legends of us who love these men (but I hate women who call them "nerd crushes." So normally do they like douche bags and bros?)
M could be Ira Glass for Halloween. All he has to do is wear a tie.
p.s. Lynda Berry is an idiot.

Idol of the Masses

I usually dismiss the new "it girls," but Jen Brill is a sort of intellectual, sexy new icon. Yeah, bloggettes love her because she is a party girl, but she is also smart, stylish, does her own thing, loves the band X, doesn't care about what people think of her dating a rad old man and works in the art world (not fashion). Asian girls all over the world finally have international "it girl" representation. And this photo spread in China Vogue is near perfection.
