The Genesis of Things

Photobucket

Great interview from Ian Svenonius for Soft Focus. I meet Ian briefly when he dj'ed at Donuts a while back ago. I was concerned that telling him that his music was the music of my childhood would weird him out or embarrass him, but he was stoked and gracious enough to give me a hug. Awesome guy.

Here he interviews Genesis P-Orridge, who talks about TG's reformation, Psychic TV and even fashion.

Photobucket

I love how he makes the distinction between TG being a band about anguish and animosity, where as Psychic TV is about humor, fun and joy. The interview is a great exchange between two very talented, brilliant and intelligent people.

Best cheekbones in the business. You know, I have no clue what her music sounds like or if her voice is even good. I just like to think what comes out sounds like Lesley Woods.

White Beasts

Photobucket

Remember those images I posted of Colin Newman, front man of Wire, performing in all snow white? I've been inspired by it this Spring season and have been donning all white these past two months (white peg-leg jeans, white oversized button up, white circle scarf), like an escaped asylum inmate. I think people here appreciate the effort (all year round we wear black religiously in SF).

Perhaps I am inspired by some looks I love from Lina Osterman:

In french, white is blanc, like blank. Recently, I've been feeling stuck. But now I'm feeling rejuvenated and this all white kick is like starting over, a blank slate.

I love clothing that drapes and has enough extra fabric that can be contorted, shaped and imagined into something else. You can layer them on in piles and piles too (I'm always, always cold, even in warm weather).

Don't forget accessories!

The ladies and new male drummer of Mika Miko (we miss you Kate!!!!) have a new album out in a few days and it is becoming a favorite summer soundtrack for 2009. Every minute is nonstop fun.

Dude Watch: The Long Hairs

PhotobucketPhotobucket
It looks like all the stylish dudes in Japan are sick of looking like pussies. I guess they are listening to a lot of Wipers and surfing (yes they surf a lot there!) to make up for all their Steven Sprouse for LV last season. Though, many are still using Murses (They are functional, aren't they?).

Packs for Wolves

Practical and cute. Will my records fit?

I can't believe I was considering being part of the San Franciscan cyclists obsession with Chrome bags (I'm seeing middle-aged Marina douche bags donning them because they think it makes them hipsters. Gross). Why can't Chrome make functionality this beautiful? Yes they are custom, but this hot?

Finally checked out Eley Kichimoto's new Eastpak line too. Love the white print. Also seriously worth considering.

Haircut 100

Photobucket

My Linda Ronstadt is back.

I finally went to see my regular stylist/friend Michelle at Sacred Salon in Mill Valley. I had the ugliest, scraggly-skinny-hipster circa 2005-Elvira-Whitesnake mullet from some moron of a stylist at Public Barber Salon. If you know me, my only hotness factor is the hair. It's been growing out and fattening up for 6 months now.

Photobucket

Hopefully it will be this long again.

Only Michelle and I are on the same page when it comes to anything (fashion, old country music, our love of brass jewelry). We both have this image of a barefoot, young Ronstadt (with big silver hoops, torn shorts, striped mini dresses) ingrained in our minds. I don't even have to open my mouth. She just KNOWS.

Style Iconoclast: The Primitives

Photobucket

I don't think that this band got much credit besides "Crash," a song I've found at the many random of karaoke bars here in SF. They had great pop songs, fitted well between post-Smiths/pre-Stone Roses and had a wonderfully adorable lead singer that was one part Grease lightning, two parts Marilyn Monroe and three parts Lagerfeld.

Photobucket

The Primitives formed in the mid-eighties, in the midst of the end of post-punk and when the British independent music scene was moving towards the jangly pop of C-86 and a straight rock n' roll sound, far away from the commercial pop and new wave bands coming from the States. Bassist Steve Dullaghan, adorable guitarist Paul Court and original drummer Pete Tweedie decided that they would form a pop band heavily influenced (both visually and sonically) by the 60s (The Velvet Underground, the Byrds), fast pop punk of the Ramones and the commercial softness of an attractive female singer (with Tracy Tracy).

What is really interesting about her style is that vocally, she sounds very sweet, very girl group pop. But the exterior image is reminiscent of tough bad girls of the 1950s. She almost always wears black leathers (like the guys) and wears lots of hardware (usually over black satin gloves and Chanel-inspired stage wear).

Here is some Chanel from a 1984 issue of Vogue, images that Tracy herself may have been inspired by

Even though Tracy got all the attention, the male counterparts all had great style too (heavy on black leathers, Monkees haircuts, drainpipe tight jeans and pointed shoes. Guys today still try to dress like Lou Reed, but I think this is the closest they ever came).

Photobucket

Paul is still a looker. I think he has since moved on to be a graphic designer (but spins at clubs every so often)

Photobucket

Rumor has it the original drummer Tweedie was kicked out of the band for mistreating Tracy's cat! (though I'm sure it was because he was a terrible drummer. They had to use a drum machine and only let him hit the high hat). I bet the cat wore black too!

Men Belong in the Kitchen Too

Ahhhhhhh!!! Dream mixer! You shall be mine someday! I haven't baked a cookie, brownie, cake or pie in ages (I usually do at least once a week minimum).

These images are from The Selby's photo series of chef Sébastien Gaudard's home. His home is impeccable and full of minimal, Parisian cool. Of course, I love his small, yet lovely kitchen (Goyard in the kitchen, why didn't I think of that?).
