Movies With Style: Vox Humana
Not only are they brilliant designers, but the ladies of Rodarte make beautiful shorts too (with a collaboration with director Griffin). Even if I find Jenny Lewis' music stupid, she looks great in Rodarte and does a good job in the short. And the film captures the drama and sinister mood of Rodarte with a soundtrack that was sung by their late grandmother in the 1940's. some of the shots remind me a lot of Le Femme Est Une Femme (one of my favorites) and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive

Tauba Auerbach
Not too long ago I picked up an issue of ANPQuarterly (Vol 2. Issue 1) early last month featuring an article on SF native Tauba Auerbach and her typography, calligraphy, prints of anagrams and her most recent work presenting the chaos of human error when crafting repetitive patterns. I instantly fell for her work, not just because it is visually appealing, but because it is smart and expresses a lot of concepts and ideas that I have been interested in studying for the past few years.
Since I was 16, I've always been interested in mathematical, repetitive patterns and semiotics, a study of how signs essentially become a process of communication (language), meaning and shape our understanding of reality. I believe that Auerbach has found an excellent way of comunicating these ideas as an art form (besides contemporary composers like Steve Reich). I'm glad she has been getting a lot of press and acclaim since the article. Here are some images of her work that I admire.

La-La La La-La-Lah, Part Time Punks!

So this weekend Michael, Andrew and I are heading down to Los Angeles for the first annual Part Time Punks Fest. And who's going to be playing there, you ask? Besides some of my all time favorite legends, like A Certain Ratio, Pylon, Medium Medium, etc, a few of my favorite contemporary punksters will be gracing the stage at Echoplex too (Vivian Girls who are amazing live, Mika Miko, NODZZZ, Love is All).
I can't wait to see everyone down there too like Piper, Cisco and the gang and all of those sweet Echo Park kids that I have gotten to know and love while Michael was living there. And the thrift shops down south are less picked over as in SF. I'll try to post pictures of all our antics soon. It should be pretty fun.
