Dude Watch: Fall 2009

It just occurred to me that I don't really post about men's clothing. I think all of my guy friends dress better than most of the women in my life (due to the fact that most of my friends are guys in general). Perhaps it is our fashion savvy gay community of gentlemen who wear Endovanera, Y-3 and Comme Des Garcon. M is always commenting about how impeccably dressed my boys can be. Hopefully, he will start taking notes.

To start off, these are some favorites from this season. I think if I were a man, or could fit in men's clothing, I would basically dress like this on a day-to-day basis.

Endovanera

This is, by far, one of my favorite American men's/unisex lines. M is actually friend's with David, one of the designers, back when he was a seamstress at the now defunct shop Work (why he doesn't get any benefits from knowing him, I'm not sure). I met him briefly at an Ariel Pink show here in the city. He is as nice and well-dressed as he is handsome. I'm really glad his career is taking off.

Looking at Endovanera, the concept of their clothing is really simple basics. Trousers, slim cut button-downs, a peacoat. But when you look closely at the details put into each article, there is so much story into what each piece has to offer. You can tell that there is a lot of hard work and creativity that goes into making each and every garment.

One of my key ideas/looks in fashion is that it is versatile and limitless. This is an idea that Endovanera captures very well. Their women's line that was launched for Spring 2009 (which compliments their men's line perfectly) is everything that I imagined it to be. Gorgeous.

Helmut Lang

I noticed no one really posts about Helmut Lang. Why is that? These looks, as well as their women's line, are so well styled and tailored. They drape beautifully and are, most of all, totally wearable.

I feel that the important factor in men's clothing is that men would really wear it (Skirts on men was all over the runway, but not everyone is living in Tokyo and not everyone is Marc Jacobs.) If a guy can't wear it, can't live in it, then the purpose was not served. You can move people by putting on a fabulous, original show, but in the end, would an average, stylish joe really wear it?

Miharayasuhiro

I adore the hodgepodge of sleek cuts with effortlessly casual, Japanese looks. Remember I'm a stickler for good tailoring and that goes especially for men's clothing.

Miharayasuhiro's looks are meant to be seasonless and it shows with some great layering.

Drop crotchies on boys look lovely too.

Dude Watch: The Long Hairs

It looks like all the stylish dudes in Japan are sick of looking like pussies. I guess they are listening to a lot of Wipers and surfing (yes they surf a lot there!) to make up for all their Steven Sprouse for LV last season. Though, many are still using Murses (They are functional, aren't they?).

Dude Watch

How amazing is this guy?

He's wearing these H&M women's mittens because he is so obviously cold. Probably doesn't even know how good this all looks together.

What is it about men's clothing that looks so effortless? He probably rolled out of bed like this, brushed his teeth, put on his skinnies, sensible walking shoes and bundled up by throwing on his girlfriend's mittens and scarf. Done!

Style Iconoclast: Ira Glass

It's weird to think that it took me 25 years to discover I have a "type" that I'm attracted to. My first crush was a teenage John Cusack who was too tall, too thin, too pale, too old for most 4 year old girls to be crushing on. But, for some reason, he had a quality I liked.

Men who are: thin, vegetarian, intellectual in an unpretencious way, have taste, dress well, eat well, have great record collections, enjoys a good book or two, hates "machismo-ness," looks good in suits and has white sprinkled into their dark hair, despite their youth.

These men have a spokesperson and his name is Ira Glass.

He has an ageless, nonchalant, smart voice. When he laughs into the mike, it was to the kinds of moments, the kinds of things you would find attractive for a guy to laugh at.

I don't know if he is a big record collector. He is related to Phillip Glass and that, my friends, is close enough for me.

And their are legends of us who love these men (but I hate women who call them "nerd crushes." So normally do they like douche bags and bros?)

M could be Ira Glass for Halloween. All he has to do is wear a tie.
