Makeout not Takeout

So I've been back from what I call Spring Break 2011. Clearly I've been out of school for quite some time, but I went with a car full of single, horny DJs/musicians. It still applied.

The weekend went as thus:

ME: I hope they all got phone numbers. The girls Saturday were hot.
KAT: Josh had sex with a girl on the balcony we were sitting in.
ME: Hahahaha. Really? While everyone was gone or when we weren't looking? It has to be the hair.
KAT: Yeah girls love him, it's crazy. He gets propositioned all the time by strangers.
ME: It's the bad boy thing he has going on.
KAT: A security guard flashed a light on them when his face was between her legs, then he asked for $10 to let them finish.

Guys would get so many more girls willing to sleep with them if they were just more generous. Josh gets laid because girls know he is. That and the long metal hair. I'm pretty sure half the guys we went with got laid immediately. There was evidence everywhere.

I went home with a bunch of gay men. Typical.

This Friday

Photobucket

Here's the line up: my favorite local band Jonas Reinhardt is playing some sick spaced out kraut, freestyle duo Corinne and Josh Azano are opening with some Miami flavor, two of my favorite San Francisco DJ's are tossing some jams in between and Lindstrom is closing the night in a cosmic haze. It's going to be pretty epic and should not be missed.

Do fashion people "get" these music references?

I often fantasize that someday, people who like fashion and people who like good music will merge. No more separation of fashion friends and music nerd friends. I know it is possible, but I can't talk about Pheobe Phillo or my love of cutie Kiko Mizuhara with my music buddies over the turntables. I can't listen to anymore Lady Gaga references when I'm hanging out with my best dressed gays. Its like I'm living secret lives.

The two places on earth where tons of regular people know their shit when it comes to music is a) Europe and b) Japan. I always think that Japanese designers and Dutch/English designers are ahead of the game, intellectually speaking. They aren't trying to sell us commercial trends like most brands, and sometimes I get the hint that their collections are like a huge middle finger to designers who are in it to sell pretty. I may or may not be on to something.

Whatever it is, Jun Takahashi listens to a lot of Krautrock and watches a lot of cheese sci-fi films and I like him for that. No, this isn't his best presentation, but it sure put a smile on my face.

Indian Summer

These ridiculous pictures was taken from 12:00 am to 3:00 in the morning. I think after a night of DIY tranny shows (I'm not a regular) and creepy bars (that are actually fronts for dirty old men to get with Korean prostitutes), we needed a serious escape.
Unfortunately, the closest thing we had was a terrible diner called GrubStake (I think the name says it all, folks).

This is Hector and Kendall right before they hit the "Portuguese corner." They are two of a few people I think naturally dress well in the city, without pretentiousness. And they are the most genuine, talented and kind people I know. Hector blogs regularly too!

It was also my friend Alix's going away party (he's moving back home to finish school at the University of Utah). This facial expression is priceless. I raided his closet before he left last weekend (Rick Owens, vintage Dior). I think it was a very smart move, yes?

We are going to miss him a lot, especially since a night with this handsome, hilarious boy is like this.

Birthday Girl

babybird birthday girl

Dinner at Greens, passion fruit mango and coffee macaroons, new tops, monster sheild ring and a night of one of my favorite bands and djs (this includes Peter Hook-style bassslines and a keytar). This birthday is looking pretty good.

Jennifer Lara

I don't think Jamaican songstresses get enough credit. Jennifer Lara makes beautiful music.

The best cover of a disco classic. It kinda rivals the original closely.

Style Iconoclast: Gino Soccio

Photobucket

I'm a pretty big Soccio fan and try to keep either the Outline record or "It's Alright" in my regular rotation. It always gets people on the floor. Gino Soccio makes some of the greatest italo/electro funk songs you will ever hear. These are all essentials in the genre.

And then, house music was born...

This is one of my all-time favorite songs. I literally listen to this everyday. Walking, biking, working out, sitting, cooking. If I'm not paying attention, it is probably due to this song.

This video is amazing with great body movements and the kids featured have such great rhythm. I think it captures an energy, a good feeling that dance music should have on our bodies and something that most music now does not capture. REAL SOUL.

Tonight!

Photobucket

If you live in the SF area and love good music, especially Punk, Post-Punk, No Wave, Reggae, Rocksteady, Dancehall, you get the point, stop by the Edinburgh Castle. I'm djing tonight. Have a pint, fish n chips and listen/dance to a whole lot of good records. It should be pretty packed.

Nothing to do for V Day?

donuts cybotron flyer
Valentine's Day disco party with Juan Atkins from Cybotron, Dam Funk, the Beat Electric kids, Hot Tub, bad fashion from Cristalette (I need to help find better designers for Donuts) and my grrrl Pickpocket is spinning upstairs! See you on the dance floor!
