My life has been reduced to one of my highest periods of laziness. I'm still productive in the grander picture, like actually going to the gym, eating well, working really hard, put in the effort to slap on some red lipstick and dancing a lot, but fashion for me has become a different little monster.

This is pretty much what I look like everyday, sans eyeglasses since I don't want to touch my eyeballs for a few months (it can't be sanitary, right?). I've narrowed my daily look to "fucking comfortable." That's it. My pants are simply a variation on sweatpants or pajama bottoms and I wear them everywhere, including parties and formal meetings. Dresses have to be over-sized with little draping tricks that makes it look cool and not mumu-like. I have one skirt and my friend Otto says that it makes me look like "Heathers." I tell him to suck it because I'm comfortable like he is in his puffy vest and his slim, but not skinny pants. I still refuse to brush my hair unless it is turning into a frightening dread and I only wear bras that feel like I'm not wearing a bra. I spend more money on being comfortable too. Trust me, it is worth it when you are chillin in some cashmere. I have also narrowed my regular shoe wear down to three, count it, THREE shoes.

When I start wondering if people will judge me I remind myself that this is California.

I'm one of those women who loath, absolutely LOATH walking around with a bag. I don't know why the fashion industry doesn't seem to understand that there is a group of women who want an inner pocket in their jackets. That we only carry a wallet, keys, phone and lipstick.

I have the upper body strength of Olive Oyl. Occasionally I carry a clutch, but only if I'm feeling girly. I rarely carry a bag unless I have to drop something off for someone, my boyfriend wants me to carry his sunglasses' case, I'm playing records somewhere or I have absolutely no pockets.

It has probably taken me about 4 years to finally settle on a solitary black bag that doesn't make me feel like a sucker. I like this one a lot. It is affordable, classy, good quality and made in the US of A.

Oh my boss is watching a bunch of the NYFW shows right now (she got to meet Bill Cunningham. So jealous!). I didn't really like many of them myself, save for a few good styling tips from JCrew and the unpretentious charm of the ladies at Vena Cava. Men's clothing for me at these times is a highlight (I reverted back to how adorable the boys from Acne SS12 were). I must be turning into a guy or a jaded, grumpy old women.

The best collaborations during the 90s for me was photog Glen Luchford and art director David James. I used to rip out Prada ads out of Vogue and I would post them all over my room. They were spooky and sultry and made me think things like, "so this is what it looks like to be a woman," like every day in a woman's life is supposed to feel like film noir.

white mountaineering

My friend Steven introduced me to this line which has been a breath of fresh air these past few months. I've recently taken a break from men's fashion and I'm just playing catch up now while trying to teach myself how to dress like a girl again for my all-female work. I thought wearing streamlined dresses and makeup made me girly, but I'm far from it. Compared to my super stylish, artistic co-workers, I look like a dude in my Swedish clothing and lack of jewelry. That, or what my friend Steven refers to affectionately as a "goth ninja."

I honestly unintentionally feel a sense of outsiderness that I can't quite shake. Something I have not felt since I was thirteen. I listen to different music. I read different blogs and magazines. I pay attention to different runway shows and brands. I'm not very good at DIYs. Compared to the diamond knuckles and creatively clashed clothing amongst the ladies at work, I'm the "boring one."

Everyone at work wears arms/fists full of jewelry and are up and up on things like pop music and gossip. I'm researching Teen Vogue and Elle magazine just to keep up. I have put together two really girly outfits that I can wear that actually has a print. Though, I've noticed I've been rebelling by not brushing my hair for months and dressing exactly like my boyfriend. Baby steps.

We rounded up some friends to escape the erratic weather in San Francisco and headed up to Yuba River, three hours north in beautiful Grass Valley. It was 95 degrees and gorgeous.

Since we've had lots of rain this season, the water was quite high, ice cold and not ideal for swimming. We hiked about 15 minutes out to a spot where tons of city hipsters and old perverts like to hang out naked. The water was still cold, but the water was far less dangerous.

We mostly sunbathed on hot rocks, got massacred by mosquitoes and watched while our crazy friend Kevin jumped into freezing mini rapids like it was a heated pool. He is out of his mind.

It's nice to have a sense of a real social life again. Life has become this distorted mash up of friends, super sweaty dancing, watching movies, spinning records again, problem solving and couch shopping. It feels really good.

I love going through fabric swatches. After over three years of living in our apartment, we are finally trying to put our money where our mouth is. Michael has been giving me encouraging words ("it doesn't matter how much it costs, as long as we get the one we want, right?" WHAA?!!!).

Unfortunately, I've been neglecting this blog since. Oops.

I promise I'll make time for all of this, somehow. But now I'm shopping for sheepskin throws for the cat. Sorry.

Here is the front view via crap camera phone. I'm not sure if this is a safe assessment, but I think after this haircut people seem to think I'm Korean. I don't mind it though. The only time I see medium length hair on Asian women is on cute Korean girls.

I think it's funny that most people, Asians included, are always fascinated with finding out what "kind" of Asian I am. I've been told I have a general Asian look, but no one seems to be sure what region. I usually get: Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, even happa, but never Korean, until now. It's pretty funny how one change can completely throw people into another stereotype of ethnicity.

With small change comes big ones. I'm getting a new job that I'm really excited about and the quality of my life is just getting better and better. It feels like a dream.

I joke that this is a Dora the Explorer haircut with 1970s Francoise Hardy bangs. I actually was aiming for Freja. The back is shorter then the front and the fringe is intentionally "over grown" looking.

If you were wondering, I go to Sacred Salon in Mill Valley. Michelle cut my hair in Isabel Marant and probably what was a pair of Margiela ankle boots. Julia was wearing a full Les Prairies outfit with stark white Comme Des Garcons oxfords she got when shopping in Paris. You see why I come here?

Our 11-year old niece was in town from SoCal so we did some sight-seeing Easter weekend in the city.

Of all the ridiculously expensive things Michael owns, I think this is my favorite jacket. It's probably older than I am and I think he found it thrifting when thrifting wasn't cool. Our niece said it "didn't go with his outfit," but what do kids know, anyway :)

I've always had a strong affection for an old man with a good uniform. There is an army of thin, elderly Chinese men, sitting cross-legged in the park. At 7-730 in the morning they do Tai Chi in front of the De Young Museum with their wives and friends. They all wear crisply ironed, white short-sleeve shirts with navy chinos, gold buckled belts and worn, but recently polished shoes. Sometimes they wear a fedora. Most have a cane. They all lived their youth in the 60s.

I like that they smile when I walk by. Maybe I look like their grand kids or maybe I look like a girl they used to date back in 1961. Whatever it is, they make my day and I make theirs.

I really like Bill Cunningham's uniform. Blue street sweeper shirt from Paris, khaki chinos and orthopedic shoes. It is so no-nonsense and you know he knows more about fashion then you could ever learn in one lifetime. He doesn't need to be on trend.

He has definitely inspired me to wear more blue too.

Finally had the chance to see the new documentary on him and it was so unbelievably good. It is about real, honest, positive fashion journalism. Everyone in the audience cheered with me like we were at a baseball game. All we wanted to do was hug the man.

MM6 Spring/Summer 2011

I'm really into essential wardrobing. I like the idea of having a small arsenal of simple, streamlined, versatile pieces that are on a regular two week rotation. I want them to all go together, to fit into one single suitcase for travel and 5 pairs of shoes max. So hard!

In reality, I only wear about 30% of my clothes on a regular basis and only really love about 10% of it. I think I dress the same everyday and I'm so lazy, I can barely put bottoms on in the morning. Everything else is just passing by before it gets recycled into the circulation of buy/sell/trade consignment vintage shops, goodwill donations and ebay. I do not need fillers.

I wrote a posting about how I, like many people, have fallen into the loop of heavy mass consumption through boredom and the constant battle with that voice in our head that says I want I want I want.

I deleted that posting and I regret it. It is the truth. Why don't people share the cultural truth on their blogs about fashion?

Clothing is a medium about craftsmanship, creativity and it can be an affordable, everyday expression we all have access to in some mean or another. We should control it, it does not control us. I think I can forget that sometimes and I get lost in that high from buy buy buying. It feels good. It works for that moment. It is so temporary.

Fortunately, I haven't stepped into a Forever 21 in, like 3 years. I think H&M have gotten lost in a sea of bad 90's floral prints and maxi dresses. Zara thankfully doesn't fit. I don't shop at the mall. There is still time. I can be saved.

I digress though.

I like MM6 this season. It is all about essentials.

Donna Mills in "The Eyes Have It."

Currently I'm breaking out a little (something that doesn't occur very often) and my face doesn't understand why the weather is changing in such a schizophrenic way, more so than usual. Right now it feels like a Bay Area summer (70+ degrees), I'm in shorts and I'm wearing "summer makeup."

I realized that I never talk about what I put on my face, so it seems weird that I never talk about it. Perhaps it's a bit too personal for me.

Like many women, I love makeup. I don't wear very much of it or have much variation in what I wear, but it is something that I enjoy on a daily basis. And I definitely have a specific look.

The beautiful woman above, besides having the most amazing leather jacket and style, has on my favorite makeup look. Bright face, strong brows, smoldering copper eyes and a matte, bright red lip.

Here's what I use on a daily basis:

1. Matte Lumière Fluide in Clair. I used to be so anti-foundation until now. I've been using Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer for years since it has sheer coverage and doesn't feel like I'm wearing any makeup, but now I only want to wear it in weather like today. Since I'm 25+, my skin is a bit drier around my cheeks and forehead. I bought Mercier's Silk Creme Foundation and this one from Chanel. I love both, but think I like the Chanel better since it has a dewier finish and isn't as thick.

2. Nars blush in Gina. This is better than Orgasm in my opinion. Orgasm is too shimmery and I hate frost and shimmery makeup. Gina has a beautiful peach pink flush.

3. Mac eyeshadow in Bark. I actually use this as a brow filler. It's a brown with a bit of some grey in it.

4. Nars eyeshadow in Lola Lola, a copper that makes a beautiful brown smokey eye. I rarely wear shadow, but when I do, it's usually this one.

5. Mac lipstick Ruby Woo. I alternate between this, Nars Red Square pencil, Mac's So Chaud, a bright reddish-orange and Heat Wave by Nars, which is a orange-red. Does that make sense?

6. Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder in Translucent. Best ever.

Then liner liner liner, mascara and Jurlique Toner Mist (I love all their mists). It's actually really low maintenance. It takes me about 5 minutes to apply. When I'm going out, I sometimes wear Ardell Accents corner lashes in 301 (natural) or 305 (bold). That's about as adventurous as I get.

As for application? I love informative, youtube makeup tutorials from pixiwoo and raeview.

No Sweat

I'm on this hardcore month-long hunt for the perfect heather grey sweatshirt. I'm only dressing for comfort these days. The thought of putting super skinny pants, or pants at all, sounds like too much work. Plus, I have this Life Magazine photo of Paul Newman on a boat in my mind. Grey sweatshirt flapping in the wind. White slacks and socks. Beer. Dirty sneakers. It haunts me. It looks so effortless. So clean and simple.

A decent sweatshirt has to feel really plush, lux and have a good design approach (even if I'm just going to pass out on the couch, while watching Netflix instant episodes of SVU, until I wake at 4am in the damn thing). Here are some possibilities I'm considering:

Acne silk back cropped sweatshirt. I have a bit of a weakness for the simplicity of this and I know that this would be kicking around the closet for a long time. Should I go for practicality or should I get something a little more interesting?

MM6 cut-out octagon sweatshirt. I think this is my first choice, although being a small a person, I don't think this would keep me very warm. This is totally something I could DIY too, but why not burn a hole in my already emptied wallet?

A.P.C. green sweatshirt adds a splash of color. Raf Simon's has ignited my passion for bright, happy colors in simple pieces. I'm trying to revive my muted wardrobe with some color here and there. I tried this on in LA and I love how super soft it is.

Laundering Essentials

I'm hand washing all of my current favorites, which is super tedious to do since I'm always afraid of ruining/loosing things in the washing machine. So I hand wash everything. I've also noticed a few things about my personal everyday style that hadn't really occurred to me before.

a) I have a tendency to not listen to practical advice when it comes to wardrobe. People tell me things like don't wear navy with black (lies!) and to buy cheap basics, fill in the rest with good quality designer clothing and to spend more on shoes.

I wear white often when it's cold, spend obscene amounts on t-shirts (once you go lux, even American Apparel will feel scratchy) and I never, ever spend a ton of money on shoes (in San Francisco or any other big city where walking is the main mode of transport, shoes will be completely destroyed within the month).

b) I wear a lot of neutral, often muted colors.

c) I only wear things that are either mildly la garconne (men's t-shirts and sweaters) or extremely feminine. For example, I really like Band of Outsiders women's lines, Boy. and Girl. But I'm pretty sure I would only really wear Girl. since in Boy. I look like a complete dike. If i were a lesbian, I would like dikes, but I'm sure I would be a lipstick.

I'm so thankful I have a steam-heated, Victorian apartment with huge closets and excellent insulation (I also have the best 60-year-old building manager who keeps our building in the most pristine condition).

Something about the music, the rain outside, the mucho picante spices and the warm air in my place has me thinking about one thing and one thing alone...SEX. Too bad my baby daddy is on a work trip.

So I've been back from what I call Spring Break 2011. Clearly I've been out of school for quite some time, but I went with a car full of single, horny DJs/musicians. It still applied.

The weekend went as thus:

ME: I hope they all got phone numbers. The girls Saturday were hot.

KAT: Josh had sex with a girl on the balcony we were sitting in.

ME: Hahahaha. Really? While everyone was gone or when we weren't looking? It has to be the hair.

KAT: Yeah girls love him, it's crazy. He gets propositioned all the time by strangers.

ME: It's the bad boy thing he has going on.

KAT: A security guard flashed a light on them when his face was between her legs, then he asked for $10 to let them finish.

Guys would get so many more girls willing to sleep with them if they were just more generous. Josh gets laid because girls know he is. That and the long metal hair. I'm pretty sure half the guys we went with got laid immediately. There was evidence everywhere.

I went home with a bunch of gay men. Typical.

I sorta put myself on a record buying lock down since my last trip down to LA left me with tons of expensive records and ZERO money. But, I'm heading down this weekend with a huge crew of DJing and musican friends to probably what will be the disco party of the year (last year was a roof top Tenderloin pool party. This time there will actually be a heated pool that doesn't need 6 guys to blow it up). We are all bringing vinyl.

It's like a record nerd spring break and it's going to be so good.

In reality, I haven't actually DJ'ed a party in a long while. My last night doing it was Halloween and although that was really, really fun, it's incredibly exhausting doing it till 4am.

Also explains after a stint doing a regular night, I needed a much deserved break from listening to common frustrations that had nothing to do with the music that's actually playing and for how draining it is to promote a night on a regular basis. People don't realize it but DJing is hard work.

Right now, I'm into playing tracks early when there is no pressure to get people on the dance floor and you can play whatever you want. I'm more than positive each car full of DJ's can get the party dancing and skinny dipping by the end of the night.

Tender Life

Michael trying to take a picture, but made a home movie instead. LOL. I was going to edit out all the background noise, but I actually like it. I wish we could be complete voyeurs and film the tables surrounding us at this brunch spot, particularly the super intellectual couple sitting next to us who kept scoping us out/listening in on our conversation in that creepy LA sorta way. The larger group on our other side seemed like people who were having a good time stuffing their faces. We sat a little closer to them.

Much better. Can you tell that I'm frozen solid? Explains the double-fisted hovering and shaking over this big cup of coffee. I've heard East Coasters telling me that no matter how cold it is back home, San Francisco winters still get to them. I can understand why. We waited an hour outside for a table at Brenda's an one of the chilliest blocks in our neighborhood. If you've never heard of it, it's a French soul food place in our neighborhood and it is spectacular. You can't see it in this picture, but I'm sitting meditation-style. I'm that comfortable here.

No one told me until now that I was dating David Byrne. I've dated/gotten to know a few young guys (of all ethnic backgrounds) with salt and pepper hair. It's hot. As hot as someone wearing Junya.

People get the wrong impression of the Tenderloin. There is violence, prostitution and some scary, scary drug deals/druggies in the neighborhood. But, for the most part, it's just normal young people and families living pretty ordinary lives. Plus we sometimes get cool murals.

Jil Sander

Besides ultra romantic florals, I seem to be on a Jil Sander kick, no? I've always admired Raf Simons' use of rich color and his good taste and influences in art and films, but I was also instantly blown away by these simple 1960's influenced silhouettes. I'm clearly a big fan of French 60's music and fashion and it was a real delight to see Simons' using the same shapes in a very crisp, clean and modern way.

Maison Martin Margiela

Seriously, did people not like this presentation? I thought the craftsmanship and "fucked-up-ness" that the Margiela team is so recognizable for was still present. Arguably too bulky, wearable and not weird enough? I don't think that means that this collection isn't a showmanship of how well the Margiela team is making interesting, innovative ideas. As for the bulky aspect, I'm always freezing during the winter, so I will bulk up the layering. I'm sure many women all over the world will too when the weather drops to freezing levels. People may whine about how the house is not the same without Margiela, but I think he clearly trusted his name to a team that he believed in.

Celine

I loved every single damn look. Wood grain, streamlined cuts and warm color palettes. Since everything related to fashion that I love is a reference to film or music, I'd like you to turn your attention to Jacqueline Bisset in Bullit. Yes the movie with Steve McQueen and the unsane car chase. For some reason, that was all I thought about when I was scoping out this collection.

People are saying things like, "minimalism is back." Really, it never went anywhere. It's always been present, but it hasn't been as heavily used as it has in the past few seasons. Philo's return has only strengthened a movement towards simplicity and quality over embellishment and the over-designed.

Haider Ackermann

Sweet-mother-of-god this was good. I think he really seems to understand what looks sexy and makes women feel sexy. Though, I wasn't really a fan of the heavy, oversized waist-cinchers he used in this show because I think Ackermann's craft can always stand alone without acessorizing at all. I recently procured a white kimono-style short jacket that is an extremely toned down version of Ackermann's Asian influenced pieces from SS11, but I definitely had his collections in mind when purchasing it.

I love Men's Fashion Week, far greater than any of the women's shows. Designers do things like focus on craftsmanship, tailoring and are often influenced by things like novels and recent politics. They are not trying to make something pretty. More like something really thoughtful with a sense of wearability.

I think Siki Im's collection this season speaks for itself in an intellectual, fully realized way, more so then most of the drab looks from Women's NYFW 2011. He is Cologne-born and educated, went to Oxford and switched from designing buildings to making men's clothing. For this collection, he uses some of my favorite conceptual ideas, like my favorite costume on the Alchemist in the Jordowsky film The Holy Mountain, streamlined architecture and Native American prints influenced by pottery artist, Maria Martinez.

Love turns into something else when you've been together for a long time. Michael's idea of romance is buying the groceries when I'm broke and changing the litter box with no complaints. Everyone in the Bay Area is freaking out over how it is supposedly going to snow this weekend, as if it is going to be a winter blizzard in Norway. Realistically, if it does, it will look more like Old Man Winter is gonna shake his dandruff flakes over the Bay Bridge. It might drop 10 degrees, there may be light frost, definitely rain and we

probably won't even see a snowflake.

If it does, my Northern California ass is going to freeze to death. I live in a place where we have micro climates. If it is warm in the Mission, it is freezing and foggy everywhere else. In the morning, it's cold and everyone is wearing gloves and scarves. Mid day, sunshine, no scarves and sometimes t-shirts only. After 5 o'clock, wool, mittens and scarves again. One day, it feels like summer. The next, it's a raining thunderstorm.

Because of the unpredictable weather, people do extremely baffling things, like wear flip flops with wool winter coats. San Francisco is where you see many a SoCal transplant wearing a tiny dress with no coat and, hear me, NO TIGHTS. Ludicrous isn't it? And yet so telling of the weather here. We just aren't prepared for a real season.

I am blind. I have a astigmatism in both eyes, everything is a blur when I wake up in the morning and I still squint when I have my contacts in. I DO NOT drive because I will probably kill you. Apparently it will get worse until I am 35. Then I will be considered "legally blind" (this actually means that I won't even see shapes without glasses or contacts).

So I'm dedicating this whole post to one of the best record stores I've ever been to in my young adult life, Wombleton Records. I've been collecting records for years and record shopping in the US is stagnate at best (so picked over and boring buying). The only time I ever get really excited is at specialized record stores that are designed for hardcore collectors like Groove Merchant in the Haight and this little Highland Park gem, Wombleton. Shops like them are all hand-picked buys from all over the world by the owners/buyers who have the most exquisite taste.

Sorry if these pictures don't do the shop justice. We were in a hurry and a glorious frenzy of ecstasy!

The prettiest custom record cabinets I've ever seen. Most record stores have big, unfinished, beat up record cabinets.

What other record store covers there walls in damask Victorian print?

LA, I Like You, Part 1

I used to be one of those San Franciscans would would talk about how much I hate Los Angeles. Then I realized it's actually an awesome place to visit. And I mean visit.

Now this is no Blue Bottle Coffee or Four Barrel, but there is nothing better in LA to make me feel more welcome then perfect 80 degree weather, an iced soy latte and the Times.

On Saturday, I also got to be involved with a video collaboration with Flaunt Magazine and Sirocco Research Labs. This is director Jimmy Marble's inspiration board at his studio. He and his team are the nicest, most professional people I've ever come across.

Since we were nearby, I stopped by Thvm Atelier's new studio space. It is an unmarked warehouse space tucked away in what seems like the middle of nowhere. Michael said that head designer Brian has always had the ability of making a place that you would think was completely uninhabitable into something special and beautiful (this is a view from the "fitting room"). Too bad my camera was dying and Bianca had to close up shop when we got there. I would have taken more shots. I fortunately did walk away with the best pair of hi-rise black jeans I've ever had.

With what little time we had to shop, we decided to go to Mohawk General Store in Silverlake. This place is a favorite. All the clothing and jewelry (from lines like Rodebjer, APC Madras and Black Crane) were completely affordable and the housewares and home decor were exactly our taste (pristine vintage headphones, acid house prints and vintage guitar-picking stools). They were even playing one of my favorite songs from Mulatu Astatke while we were shopping.

Thank you Los Angeles for being so good to us.

Right now I'm really into low ponytails, strong, subtle prints and bobs.

I'm pretty sick of literal 90's fashion translations everywhere in the city. It's so boring to me and lacks in imagination and polish. Floral dress+leather jacket+Doc Martins. It's on everyone. Not everyone in the 90's was into "grunge" and just because grunge is trendy now doesn't mean girls have to be so literal with it.

This is FACT: Boys in SF dress so much better. The shopping is better for guys here too. San Francisco girls shop at Lululemon and H&M, think James Perse is fashionable, dress according to their favorite celebrities and wear yoga pants with everything. Conversations with stylish men about fashion is almost always intelligent. Conversations about fashion with girls is almost always superficial. Guys notice that my over-sized-horse-blanket coat is "Chloe inspired." Girls just look at me confused.

These facts make me so thankful for shops like Metier, MAC and Acrimony. If they weren't here, I'd do something crazy like move to LA Japan.

I don't think I was a very happy child when I was little. I think I was too old for my age. I never played video games. I never asked for toys from my parents. All I wanted to do was read and I was unbearably shy (so shy people in school didn't know what my voice sounded like until they heard me talk months later on the play ground). She's got great California style that is reminiscent of Erin Wasson and Noot Seear (really laid back with things slashed, cut, studded and fringed for texture). This is exactly what San Francisco fashion is all about. Aging hipsters from SF move to Portland for a reason. It's because it's the same place, only cheaper. And style-wise, both cities are 10 years behind New York and Los Angeles. Mostly because the majority of people here don't really care about fashion.

I actually like that this town isn't full of pretentious fashion people. It makes us all so much more grounded. But at the same time, it's unfortunate because there are so many talented, creative and stylish people here in the city and in Portland (this awesome kid and Stand Up Comedy to name a few). I think that this "bird crap" makes us all look like a laughing stock. But then again, we live where most people don't care about fashion.

I think this show is genius.

I try not to post collections too often because I feel like those are things that people can find on their own. This one was just too good not to share. I love it when men's clothing has an influence on women's. I also love how the first thing I thought was how good Chantal Goya and Francoise Hardy would look in all of this.

My personal "style" has it's variations, just like any woman. There are, what I call, consistent themes and influences that are always present that make me like the things I like with the budget I have. I guess that's why I started this whole blog thing in the first place. To document a lot of those influences.

I posted on my Tumblr that I'm eating seafood and fish, and was absolutely enjoying this new adventure in flavors. I've been a strict vegetarian for the past 11-12 years and don't really remember how all these animals tasted like. Now I remember. They are tasty.

One of the funny things about being a vegetarian for a long extended period is that tons of people in SF thinks they are a vegetarian for sometimes eating vegetables.

"Oh I'm a vegetarian, but I eat fish."

"I'm totally vegan, but sometimes I'll eat a burger."

Just because you actually ate some string beans with your steak does not make you a vegetarian. Also, some vegans and vegetarians were some of the most unhealthy people I knew (some ate only rice with nutritional yeast on top, some ate nothing but junk food). SF is full of characters.

But, I digress.

I've debated for the past year or so about eating fish and found out I'm a type O- (we are the only blood type that can't be vegetarian). I'm tired all the time and take naps a lot (though, I think this is mostly a stereotype about vegetarians). I was not eating enough food in general (so unheathy). I picked up pick up Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer to mull over this moral dillema of what it would mean for me if i abandon 12 years if saving animals for tasty tandoori fish on my dinner plate.

Then I finally had some sushi. Then soft shell crab. Then Chilean Sea Bass.

I may go back to eating strictly vegetarian, but for now the exploration is really exciting. Do I feel guilty sometimes about eating fish? Of course. Will I ever eat beef, pork or chicken again? Is that the next step for me? Fuck no. That is disgusting.

I think something I will take from being a vegetarian is that I think I appreciate simple flavors from things like vegetables more and that food is better appreciated/cherished/understood in the long run. I pay attention more to what I eat, where it comes from and the quality and work brought to making it available to me. I think educating yourself about food is like doing the same with fashion, music, art, academics.

Playing Fashion, Winter 2010

When I was 13, I started collecting editorials. I started playing attention to fashion and it was so exciting, so powerful during that time in my life. I covered my walls with clippings. I read Ginsberg and Thus Spoke Zarathustra and dressed in black. I met a bunch of older teens/college students who taught me about Wire and MBV and about what it was to be a music collector. I got good grades. I was a good kid.

After I moved out at 17, I was super inspired by girlie looks that were really sixties, floral and French. I thrifted a lot. I bought tons of "outfits." I bought a lot of insanely expensive records. I spent a lot of money frivolously and consumed things that I thought would make me happy for that brief moment in my life. And man, was I a flirt. At the time, that was who I was and what I was like. I convinced myself that money didn't rule me, things didn't rule me and my image to people mattered. I don't dislike this me. I was a pretty liberated little lady and I think I dressed for fun. But, I made a lot of mistakes.

Now that I'm older, most editorials bore me. I've become a cynical and hardened critic. I do, though, try to listen to other people's advice even when they don't think I do and have become way more fucking Zen or at least ~~try to be~~ (hope to be). I carry a sewing kit and Shout wipes. I bought shoe trees. I listen to more talk radio. I walk slower. I've always been lactose intolerant. Always. You start to look at some of the things you did as a young adult, thought, bought and decided. You step back and think "wtf was I thinking?!! I was such a smart kid."

Maybe getting a little older makes you boring, maybe it makes you out of touch with how most people are thinking, feeling, liking for that brief moment in their young adult life, but I'm liking this older me for being a bit more cautious.

I'm not sure if other girls like the stuff I post on fashion or if they even like any of the music stuff or get it. I don't even know where I'm going with all this. But, blogging for some reason makes me happy. Writing something makes me happy. I think that's all that matters in the end.

One of my favorite DJ's Tim Sweeney from BIS killed it last night at the Honey Sunset NYE Party. We danced on the balcony nonstop like the Peanuts Gang.

Most girls i know think a pretty face and a well paying job is sexy. I think a brainy music nerd with a huge record collection is hot. Maybe that's why all the guys I've dated have all been into DJing and record collecting. They usually have big guy crushes on guys like Tim too.

I'm sick of all the black.

Usually during the spring/summer months, my wardrobe turns into the black parade. Maybe I'm rebelling or maybe it's that we don't really have seasons here in the Bay Area. But this year, I'm thinking of embracing some color here and there. Mostly my favorite colors to wear (primary blue, poppy red, silver). So, it's back to 2005 for me!!

Uggh, love her. My boyfriend's personal style is like a cross between Chris Bell from Big Star and David Hemmings in Blow Up. I don't know if it's his influence, but I like the look on girls, too with the addition of a leather jacket.

Do fashion people "get" these music references?

I often fantasize that someday, people who like fashion and people who like good music will merge. No more separation of fashion friends and music nerd friends. I know it is possible, but I can't talk about Pheobe Phillo or my love of cutie Kiko Mizuhara with my music buddies over the turntables. I can't listen to anymore Lady Gaga references when I'm hanging out with my best dressed gays. Its like I'm living secret lives.

The two places on earth where tons of regular people know their shit when it comes to music is a) Europe and b) Japan. I always think that Japanese designers and Dutch/English designers are ahead of the game, intellectually speaking. They aren't trying to sell us commercial trends like most brands, and sometimes I get the hint that their collections are like a huge middle finger to designers who are in it to sell pretty. I may or may not be on to something.

Whatever it is, Jun Takahashi listens to a lot of Krautrock and watches a lot of cheese sci-fi films and I like him for that. No, this isn't his best presentation, but it sure put a smile on my face.

I was lucky enough to come across Lizzie Owen's first season and the craftsmanship was impeccable. Her SS2011 lookbook, though, blew my mind. Apparently Daiki Suzuki has become a fan of hers and I don't blame him.

I think I had some pretty good style back when I was a tween and I thought a mash up of Shirley Manson, Bilinda Butcher and Miki from Lush was the coolest look ever. I remember staying up really, really late just so I could watch this exact live preformance and this one. I miss my red hair. A lot.

I guess I’m starting a new thing where I buy impractically white things in the most inappropriate times (in this case, autumn and winter). But, I think that rule only applied during the Industrial Revolution when it was created for practical purposes. Fortunately, I am not a 6 year-old working as a coal miner.

Sometimes this is how I feel about fashion. It can be either controversial and intelligently progressive or it can be a big fucking joke. Half of the people I have met that are a part of the “industry” are some of the most creative, intelligent people I’ve come across. The other half are the kind of people who: say things like “fashion is my life,” have boyfriends take pictures of them in a field for their blog and wear furry everything with denim shorts all year round. They are too concerned with what other people think and they rely too much on trends. They don’t read books or do anything intelligent.

Smart people who work with them usually feel sorry for them.

Best way to spend a Sunday morning off was a) procrastinating b) soy hot chocolate and ~~strong~~ seizure-inducing coffee c) brunch at Farmer Brown and d) a holiday photoshoot with one of my favorite beauties on earth, Lindsey.

Not only is she stunning (good Swedish genes!), but she is also witty, well-read and one of the most intelligent friends we have. She also loves my pies.

Not only did we bring a camera, but we also had our trusty smart phones snapping photos for variation. Surprisingly, the IPhone photos came out the best.

Japanese pro photog Koichi Mitsui said of the boom of professional photographers using their IPhones as tools:

Its "simplicity keeps me devoted to only composition and the perfect photo opp."

It's baffling how advanced technology is moving. We love this new wave of instant, portable

photography that can, with the right composition, concept and POV, become something really beautiful, fun and special for the amateur photog.

Thank you to Lindsey and Joshua for one of the most playful photoshoots I have ever done.

Packing for vacation to sick Brooklyn bands and waiting for our new camera to come in the mail (wtf FEDex?!!!). I'm pretty sure The Honey will kill me for packing nothing lower than 4 1/2" heels. Oops.

Not sure why I'm listening to something so melancholy, but I'm thinking this will sound beautiful on the plane.

I went to school not for fashion, but media. I like fashion because it is like media. It’s about communication and conveying a concept/politic/inspiration.

I’m liking this ad both aesthetically and intellectually. People don’t want to pick up magazine’s and sift through 30 pages of adverts anymore and smart editors like Fabion Baron know that.
He did a great job making this look good, too. Makes you want to wear everything, doesn’t it?
